Police Identify Man Accused of Stabbing Officer Near MIA

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Miami-Dade Police have now identified a man killed after getting into a confrontation with an officer Tuesday night.

Police say Dominique Jean, 51, tried to set a gas station on fire at 2501 NW 42nd Avenue.

According to police, Officer Mario Gutierrez stopped him but got into a deadly confrontation with Jean in which Jean allegedly stabbed the officer with a knife and a screwdriver. The officer then shot and killed him.

This was not the first time Jean used a knife in an attack. Jean was arrested last year for aggravated assault with a knife.

He was arrested in December 2012 after a victim claimed Jean chased him and tried to stab him in the back.

Sources told CBS4's Peter D'Oench  police believe that Jean was homeless.

They're also investigating whether he was taken to a psychiatric ward in the past.
