Board Votes To Keep School Grade Safety Net

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) – A controversial safety net put in place to keep Florida's schools from dropping by more than one letter grade at a time will stay – for now.

The State Board of Education voted by a 4-2 margin on Tuesday to keep the provision which was dubbed "temporary" when it was first proposed earlier this year.

But state education officials argue that the safety net provision is needed until the state completely transitions to new standards. Those new standards — which have come under fire from conservative groups — take effect during the 2014-15 school year.

Some board members criticized the decision to keep the safety net in place until school grades are handed out in the summer of 2016.
