Florida Will Not Use State Funds To Open National Parks

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) — State officials said they will no use state money to reopen national parks in the Sunshine State.

That means parks such as Everglades National Park will remain shuttered for the Columbus Day weekend unless Congress comes to an agreement.

The administration of President Barack Obama said Thursday it will allow some parks closed due to the federal government shutdown to reopen as long as states cover the costs.

But a spokesman for Gov. Rick Scott said Florida has no intention of spending state money.

Frank Collins said it was the obligation of the federal government to reopen the parks and that "Florida taxpayers will not foot the bill to cover Washington's failure to negotiate and compromise."

Florida is home to several national parks, as well as national seashores and national monuments such as the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine.
