Bomb Squad Blows Up Suspicious Device in Miami Gardens

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – It was an unusual sight early on a Thursday morning when a bomb squad technician in a full protective suit and a bomb squad robot could be seen disabling a suspicious device.

About 5 a.m. police were called to a shopping plaza near NW 199th Street and NW 27th Avenue in Miami Gardens for reports of shots fired.

When police got to the scene they said they found what appeared to be some sort of explosive near the ATM.

"They think somebody put a bomb that's what I heard, said Jose Rosada.

Rosada was on the way to work and saw the police perimeter and the traffic backup.

"A lot of police cars all around here they don't let it pass it was all the way down there," added Rosado.

He works in the shopping plaza and says people were scared after seeing the bomb squad.

"Very nervous all day," said Rosado.

The bomb squad detonated the device and police said it appears someone was trying to break into the ATM to steal cash.

There are bullet holes in the machine. The ATM remained closed and many who passed by it were surprised to hear what happened.

"I didn't want to see it I'm glad I wasn't here," said Jason Jones, who uses the ATM.

"I never knew something like that could happen here. You hear such things and you always think it's in the other part of the world where you have terrorists and that sort of thing happens, but thank God we have effective police officers and effective law enforcement agent,"  Anthony Asogwe added.
