POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) – A 14-year-old boy with 10 outstanding warrants and who is also on probation is now charged with a terrifying armed robbery a month ago of a U.S. postal carrier.

“Imagine how scary it must have been for this postal carrier to be faced by someone wearing mask from the movie “Scream” and also pointing a gun at his face,” said BSO spokeswoman Dani Moschella.

“This is a 14 year old boy with 10 outstanding warrants and who is also on probation,” Moschella told CBS4’s Peter D’Oench. “This was a reoffender.”

Moschella said the youngster was arrested after a tip to Crimestoppers and confessed to the crime.

“It did pay off,” said Moschella. “This was an anonymous tip that named the teen. Now he is off the street.”

Moschella said most of the youngster’s warrants were for burglary and grand theft. Now he’s charged with armed robbery.

Moschella said it was 2:45 p.m. on September 9th when 52-year-old Postal carrier Glenn Girard was attacked.

She said the youngster pointed a gun at Girard, while wearing a mask from the movie “Scream” and demanded Girard’s keys.

Girard complied but because the youngster kept the gun pointed at his face, they wrestled. The teenager ran away but dropped the mask and Girard’s vehicle key.

Moschella said the mask has been recovered but the vehicle key is still missing.

Girard was not seriously injured. He had scrapes and bruises.

Authorities had passed out flyers in this case and asked for the public’s help.

Postal carriers have been targeted for their keys before—most of the time for master keys that open up entire sections of mailboxes.

“In this case, the victim was just asked for his keys and he only gave up one key—the key to his vehicle,” said Moschella.

“This is something that the postal service takes very seriously,” she said.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office was not identifying the youngster since he is a juvenile. He is being held at the Juvenile Assessment Center in Fort Lauderdale after a court hearing Tuesday morning.
