Public Hearing On State Education Standards Coming To Davie

DAVIE (CBSMiami/AP) — Later this month, Florida will hold three public hearings on controversial new education standards.

In September, Gov. Rick Scott ordered hearings on Common Core State Standards.

His move came amid criticism of the new standards from conservatives and Republican Party activists.

The hearings will be held Oct. 15-17 in Tampa, Davie and Tallahassee.

The Department of Education is also taking feedback on the standards on its website.

When he announced the hearings Scott said it's possible public comments could lead to changes to the standards. The standards were adopted by the State Board of Education in 2010.

Critics of Common Core want the Florida Legislature to "pause" the standards from taking effect. They are supposed to be fully implemented during the 2014-15 school year.
