Residents Back Home After Pipe Bomb Scare Leads To Evacuation

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Dozens of Southwest Miami-Dade residents lost a lot of sleep overnight after being evacuated for hours due to a pipe bomb scare.

Residents of the Four Quarters Habitat apartment complex were evacuated Thursday night when the suspicious item was discovered near a dumpster.

Police and fire rescue units responded to the scene along SW 107 Avenue between Kendall Drive and Sunset shortly before 9 p.m.

Investigators said the located a PVC-type pipe that raised their suspicions to the point of calling the Bomb Squad out to mitigate the threat.

"The came banging on our door," Alexandria Goff said. She sat with her daughter at the playground waiting for the all-clear.

"Police asked me when was the last time she ate because it could be hours," Goff said.

Many residents stood with their dogs on leashes waiting to be allowed back into their homes. "I'm worried," a woman named Anthie said. "We don't know what's going on... this is usually a quiet place."

Some units lost power during the investigation.

Police said it appeared the item did not contain explosive materials, despite its realistic appearance.
