Infant Critically Injured After Fall Inside North Miami Apartment

NORTH MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A 4-month-old baby was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital after falling inside a North Miami apartment, police said Wednesday.

Relatives gathered outside the Ryder Trauma Center for an update on the boy, whose condition police originally described as "grave." Police said Wednesday night he was upgraded to "stable condition."

"Happy baby, loved his mom, full of joy," Karen Denard said when asked to describe the infant. She's the boy's aunt. "It was nothing more than an accident."

North Miami Police said the baby fell inside an apartment along Northeast 133rd Street and 6th Avenue.

Investigators did not immediately say what the child fell from.

"We don't know what happened," another aunt told CBS4's Lauren Pastrana. "It was nothing more than an accident and she's a great mom."

Police questioned the boy's mother, but released her a few hours later.

"The mother is a pretty nice lady," neighbor Marie Matthew said. "She take care of her business. She take care of her children."

Detectives removed bags of evidence from the first-floor unit, and planned to speak with neighbors.

"I'm a single parent. I know when you're dealing with kids, certain things happen, like an accident," Matthew said. "I would say it's an accident that happened to her."

No charges had been filed as of Wednesday night.

Police said two other children live inside the home, but they were not there when the baby fell.
