Woman Killed, Man Injured In Cat Rescue Attempt On Turnpike

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami/AP) – A Boynton Beach woman was killed and a man from Tequesta was injured when he tried to save a cat on the side of the Turnpike.

Michael James Schneider, 35, was northbound late Monday afternoon when he noticed a cat on the side of the roadway just south of the Sawgrass Expressway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. He parked by the roadway and walked back toward the cat.

As he approached it, he was struck by Honda Accord driven by 75-year old Mary Jane Alston.

FHP investigators said Alston went off the road with Schneider on the hood before hitting his parked car and a guard rail. He was then slammed into the shoulder.

Both drivers were rushed to Broward Health North Medical Center. Alston died. Schneider remains in critical condition.

The cat did not survive.
