New York Bank Robbery Suspect Found On Miami Beach

MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – A New York man wanted half a dozen bank robberies in the Big Apple was picked up Monday night at a Miami Beach hostel.

Miami Beach police said one of their detectives, who is part of the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force, was contacted by the New York Police Department about 58-year old Derek Harper who may be in the city.

Harper, who was wanted for six bank jobs and three commercial robberies, was believed to be staying in a Freehand Miami, a hostel at 2727 Indian Creek Drive. When they checked it out, they found that Harper was indeed staying in room 307.

A perimeter was set up around the building and several officers were placed on the 3rd floor as a precaution.

Contact was made with Harper and a few minutes he surrendered in tears. He was taken to Miami Beach Police headquarters where he reportedly admitted to robbing numerous banks in New York.

NYPD detectives will be flying to Miami on Wednesday to take him back to New York.
