Boy Left In Daycare Van Found Alone In Parking Lot

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – An investigation is underway after a four-year old boy was found alone in the parking lot of a Pompano Beach daycare.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said someone spotted the boy in the parking lot of the Little Rainbow Academy at 101 SE 11th Avenue, around 6 p.m. Monday and gave them a call. When deputies arrived they found the boy, who had apparently been left in the daycare's van.  Paramedics checked out the boy who appeared to be okay.

"How can you forget a little child in the back of a van like that," wondered Armandina Mirelas who lives near the daycare.

On Tuesday, employees of the daycare inspected the van's safety alarm system which is supposed to alert them if a child is still in the van.

"They left a kid inside the van," said David Toribio, a relative of one of the day care's employees.

"I saw the police and I saw paramedics and I saw a lot of trucks," said Mirelas.

Sheriff's office investigators said they are still trying to figure out what happened and who, if anyone, is at fault. It is still unclear how long the child was left alone or if the vans safety system was functional.

Mirelas said she had considered signing her grandson up at the daycare but not anymore.

"That's bad. I think the ones that work at the center they should know how to take care of the kids. That's why the parents leave them there so they can be taken care of," said Mirelas

Representatives from the daycare told CBS4 they were concerned about the incident and were cooperating with investigators. At this point no action has been taken against the employee who was responsible for looking after the boy.
