Pedestrian Hit And Killed At MIA

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A pedestrian was hit and killed outside Miami International Airport around noon on Friday.

According to Miami-Dade Police, the was 51-year-old victim was on his way back from a business trip with a co-worker. The tags on his suitcases show he may have landed at MIA from Atlanta.

Police said the man, who has not been identified, was crossing the street on the crosswalk at concourse H when he was by a Chevy SUV.

"The victim was attempting to walk across the concourse in the pedestrian cross walk when he was struck by a vehicle," said Detective Robin Pinkard with the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Dozens of travelers and airport officials witnessed the crash. They saw the man suffered severe head injuries after being thrown several feet.

"It happened in a split second, it was horrible," said an airport employee who did not want to be identified.

Traffic was backed up at the airport as detectives closed part of the road to investigate.

"The place was jammed up and traffic was not moving and everyone was confused to see what was going on," said a traveler Victoria Hasford.

Police said they don't believe speed was a factor in the deadly accident and no charges have been filed against the female driver as of Friday afternoon.

The driver of the car was allowed to leave the scene of the crash.

Investigators say it is still unclear who had the right of way and who is at fault.
