Candlelight Vigil In Miami Monday To Oppose Syria Strikes

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – There's a candlelight vigil scheduled Monday night at The Torch of Friendship to urge South Florida Representatives to vote against bombing Syria.

The event in Miami is part of a national day of action being organized by the progressive organizations MoveOn.org Civic Action, CREDO Action, Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), and Win Without War.

Similar vigils are scheduled to take place in nearly one hundred cities across the country on Monday.

The Torch of Friendship is located at NE 3rd Street and Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami.

Monday's vigil is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.

President Barack Obama has asked Congress to vote on a potential resolution after alleging the Syrian government officials authorized the use of chemical weapons during a recent attack which killed 1,429 people near the capital of Damascus.

Debate on the resolution is set to begin this week as lawmakers return to Washington D.C.

President Obama is set to make a speech to the nation Tuesday evening regarding the situation in Syria.
