Possible Drag Race May Have Led To Deadly Crash

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A Saturday morning crash killed one person and injured three.

Witnesses said it was the result of a drag race.

Family tells CBS4 the man killed is Humberto Perez, 49. His wife says Perez has just dropped her off at work when moments later she heard the crash. She ran outside and saw her husbands crushed car.

"I don't know how I am going to endure this, I don't know. I'm all alone now," said Milagros Lazo. "We were inseparable, he was such a loving husband, a good man."

CBS4 News was at the scene at Northwest 36th street and 17th avenue in Miami's Allapattah neighborhood soon after the accident occurred Saturday morning around 8 a.m.

Miami-Dade police say the Perez was ejected from his gold Nissan and died on the scene.

Police said a green Mercedes Benz was driving east on NW 36th street when it hit Perez's gold Nissan, which was turning left onto 36th street from nw 17th avenue.

According to witnesses, the driver of the Mercedes blew through a red light. Both cars lost control and smashed into a county bus.

The driver and a passenger in the Mercedes were seriously injured and taken to Ryder Trauma Center. They are now stable.

"Two people inside the Mercedes Benz had to be extricated using the jaws of life," said Lt. Ignatius Carroll with Miami Fire Rescue.

A passenger aboard the bus was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The bus' driver was treated while at the scene.

Traffic Homicide detectives continue to investigate whether drag racing is to blame. They are looking through surveillance video from the bus and area businesses to determine who is responsible for the crash.
