Tow Truck Procession Honors Slain Driver

LAUDERDALE LAKES (CBS4) -- Friends, family, and dozens of tow truck drivers gathered Sunday to say goodbye to fellow driver David Herr. Herr, 36, was shot Tuesday in the parking lot of a Lauderdale Lakes apartment complex as he was getting ready to tow a car.

Deputies reported to the St. Croix apartments at 4150 NW 34 Street just before 3 p.m. after receiving a report of shots fired and found Herr dead.

"He  loved his job and the only thing I can say is if something like this were to happen I'm glad it was on the job because he was doing what he loved," said Herr's ex-wife Christie Owens.

Investigators say Triston Johnson, the owner of the Jaguar that Herr was trying to tow,  shot Herr in the back of the head and then shot him several more times.

When deputies arrived, they say Johnson fired at them.  At least one deputy fired back hitting Johnson.

He's expected to survive, but Herr's family is grieving.

His ex-wife and daughter say they're finding support in the community of tow truck drivers who spent the afternoon sharing memories.  "I was 17 and he was my first love and you know I don't want anybody here to think I didn't still have love for him," said Owens.

"He cared about family a lot and the tow truck drivers he was like brothers to them," added Herr's daughter.
