Keys Deputy Saves Family, Dog Trapped By Fire

KEY LARGO (CBSMiami) – A quick thinking Monroe County Sheriff's deputy helped a family of four and their dog trapped by a fire escape through the upper story of the home.

The fire reportedly started early Sunday morning in a boat parked under the house at 105 La Paloma Road. The boat was parked right next to the only entrance and the heat and flames kept the family from getting out.

When Deputy Dave Campbell arrived, he found the family trapped on the second floor, unable to escape the building. He directed the father to throw the dog, a 75 pound Boxer, into the pool below the house. He then used the ladder to help the family to safety.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
