Man Fishing In The Keys Bitten By Lemon Shark

LOWER KEYS (CBSMiami) – Fishing in the lower Keys went awry for a Cape Coral man and his nephew after a Lemon shark severely bit his hand.

Walter Kefauver, 58, along with his nephew Cody Ellis, 18, were fishing onboard an 18-foot flats boat, according Monroe County Sheriff's Office

After reeling in a Bonefish, the two men attempted to catch a shark—and they did.

Once the four-foot Lemon shark was reeled in Kefauver, trying to remove the hook, was bit deep into his left hand near the wrist.

According to authorities, Kefauver's nephew called 911 before bringing his uncle to Shark Key boat ramp.

Paramedics were waiting for Kefauver at the boat ramp and then transported him to Lower Keys Hospital.

Because the hospital was not properly equipped to handle the man's shark bite, he was airlifted to a hospital in Miami.
