3 Florida Beaches Make Top 10 Best Beach List

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – No best beach list would be complete without at least one sandy area from Florida on it and this year's Top 10 Beaches from Dr. Beach at Florida International University goes a little further and has 3 beaches in the Sunshine State on the list.

Dr. Beach, real name Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, puts out an annual list of the Top 10 Beaches and has been doing it for the last 23 years. This year the top spot on the list went to Main Beach in East Hampton, New York.

You don't have to go too far down the list to get to your first Florida beach. Coming in at number three was St. George Island State Park Beach in the Florida Panhandle. A little further down the list at number six was Barefoot Beach in Bonita Springs. And finally at number seven was Cape Florida State Park Beach in Key Biscayne, Florida.

Here's what Dr. Beach said about Cape Florida State Park Beach, the only beach in South Florida to make the list: Cape Florida State Park, located at the southern tip of Key Biscayne, provides clear, emerald-colored waters and gentle surf. This fine, white coral sand beach is great for swimming, as waves are knocked down by a large sand shoal offshore. In addition, the Cape Florida Lighthouse allows for a breath-taking view of this beautiful beach.

The last Florida beach to take the top overall spot was in 2011 when Siesta Beach on Siesta Key near Sarasota was ranked as the best beach in the country.
