Pedestrian Killed After Driver Loses Control In Church Parking Lot

MIAMI (CBS4) - Police are investigating a deadly crash outside a Catholic school in Southwest Miami-Dade.

Children leaving an after school program at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish School passed police tape in the parking lot surrounding the crash scene.

Police say Catalina Gomez Pelaez, 27, was walking outside the school building when Noris Better, 73, lost control of her car and ran into Gomez Palaez, killing her.

The Archdiocese of Miami, which runs the school, said Gomez Palez was at the school to pick up a relative's children. The children were not with her at the time of the crash

"The children were in a building close by. At no time were they in any danger," said Mary Ross Agosta, spokeswoman for the Archdiocese.

Agosta said no children saw the crash, but some saw the aftermath.

Investigators surrounded the scene for hours as family members gathered to grieve.

"Before the medical examiner removed the body Monsignor Schwanger did say a prayer over the victim's body and many of the police officers joined in on the prayer and the blessing," said Agosta.

Even after police left, family and friends lingered awhile longer before finally driving away in tears.

Agosta said the night was very difficult for everyone involved.

"We've all learned lessons and we've seen tragedies over this past week and past few days, but just a split second two lives have been changed forever changed forever," said Agosta.

The Archdiocese sent parents of students who attend the school a text message telling them what happened. There will be counselors available at school for the children.

At this point, no charges have been filed in the case.
