Suspicious Device Detonated On Key Biscayne

KEY BISCAYNE (CBSMiami) – Tensions are high across the nation and South Florida in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings. That's why police and fire officials took to the beach in Key Biscayne where a suspicious device was found Wednesday morning.

The device, about the size of a thermos, was found behind a hotel at 350 Ocean Drive by a man and his son who are visiting from Boston.

The man told CBS4 News that he was walking along the beach with his son when he spotted the canister with a label on the side that read, "If you find this device, call police or the military."

He did immediately. When police arrived, they blocked off the area of the beach near the shoreline so nobody could get near it.

After a close inspection, an official buried the device in sand, and then it was safely detonated.

Still no word on what the device was.
