BSO Event Removes Tons Of Guns From Streets

POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) – The Broward Sheriff's office, with help from Broward Crime Stoppers and the City of Pompano Beach, collected 124 guns Saturday at its first gun buyback event.

Residents dropped off rifles, shotguns, Saturday Night Specials and revolvers – no questions asked – in exchange for almost $9,000 in Walmart gift cards.

The event was aimed at reducing gun violence and unnecessary injuries to citizens.

"We may not ever know how many crimes we've prevented with this event, but we know there won't ever be a funeral in Pompano Beach because of one of the guns we collected today," Sheriff Scott Israel said.

All the collected guns will be destroyed.

The Miami Police Department also hosted its second gun buyback event of the year on Saturday. That event took place at the Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Allapattah.

The number of guns that were taken in at that event is not yet known.
