House Fire Claims Life Of Elderly Man In Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – An early morning house fire in Northeast Miami has left an elderly man dead.

The fire broke out in the home located at NE 82nd Terrace and 1st Avenue.

According to family members who spoke to CBS4's Marybel Rodriguez, the victim's name is Dalbemar Domerson who was in his 80s. They said he lived with his wife who is in Haiti. He has three children but they don't live in the home.

His brother-in-law recalled Domerson fondly.

"He loved to tell stories and joke about everything," said Benito Jacotin.

Fire investigators said he was the only person in the house when the fire broke out around 5:00 a.m.

Fontines Joseph, one of Domerson's neighbors, woke up to the flames this morning.

"I was asleep see, noise, click, click, when I open the door, the fire was in the back," said Joseph.

Joseph said he called for help and within minutes fire crews arrived.

Firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly but were unable to save Domerson.

"After they forced entry through multiple locations, the front gate of the house, the front door of the house and into the room where the fire was, they knocked the fire down quickly but in another room which was the kitchen they found an elderly gentleman man who was overcome by super heated gases," said Miami Fire Captain Alex Fernandez.

For Jacotin, he's left trying to figure out how to break the news to his wife.

"I don't know how I am going to tell my wife what happened to her brother," said Jacotin.

It is still unclear what caused the fire.
