Driver Killed When Car Slams Into Utility Pole, Opa Locka Home

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – One person was killed when a car plowed into a home in Opa locka early Monday morning.

Neighbors in the 1800 block of Opa locka Boulevard said the driver the car lost control when he came around a curve.

The car slammed into a utility pole, sending a power line flying. It then struck a wrong way sign before it hit the home and caught fire.

Homeowner Alan Burrows said he and his neighbors tried to help the men in the car.

"I had just gone to bed. I heard a loud crash, right against the house, opened up the door to see what was going on and I couldn't open the door. The car crashed. There was guy on the ground and another guy on the ground. We tried to help to help them. Our neighbors came out and they had the guys who were in the car," said Burrows. "The line (electrical) was down, jumping around and there was fire and smoke. Chaos."

The driver of the car, identified as Julian Lamar Mitchell, died. His passenger, whose name has not been released, was injured.

Police said the two men had been at a bar earlier and suspect alcohol played a role in the crash.
