Miami Police To Hold First Gun Buyback Operation Of 2013

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Police Department wants your guns. In efforts to reduce gun violence, Miami police will hold its first 2013 gun buyback operation of the year this weekend.

On Jan. 19, anyone can drop off any firearm at designated locations and receive a gift certificate with no questions asked. The gift cards will be for Wal-Mart, Winn-Dixie and there are also Miami Heat tickets.

 

"We are urging the public to join us in the efforts to reduce gun violence and make a difference," the police department said in a news release.

"As a community we must take a stand against gun violence, and this campaign will help remove guns from our streets." said Mayor Tomas Regalado.

Firearms may be dropped off at the Model City NET (Jordan Grove Baptist Church) located at 5946 NW 12 Avenue on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

"Thirty-three people across our country lose their lives every single day because they get shot", said Chief of Police Manuel Orosa.

This is the first of three Gun Buy Back events to be held in the City of Miami.

The other two are:

  • Jan. 26 - Overtown NET, St. John Baptist Church, 1328 NW Third Ave.
  • Feb. 2 - Little Havana NET, San Juan Bosco Catholic Church, 1301 W. Flagler St.
