Hialeah Woman Crushed In Boating Accident

MIAMI (CBS4) - A day on the water turned deadly when investigators say a woman was crushed between a boat and the MacArthur Causeway.

Investigators identified the woman as Janette Africano, 35, of Hialeah.

"We don't know why the boat stopped underneath the MacArthur Causeway but we do have some info the female that was on board the vessel was trying to push off from the bridge and at some point she became stuck between the bridge and the vessel," said Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino.

A family friend said the woman was boating with her husband.

"He did everything he could but unfortunately it just didn't work out," said Pino.

The Coast Guard escorted the boat to Watson Island where paramedics tried to revive Africano.

"They went to little boat get a lady then give her CPR, spend like 45 minutes giving her CPR, she never moved," said Jean Cadet who saw the rescue efforts.

An ambulance took Africano to Jackson Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Now investigators are working to determine how this accident happened. Pino said investigators will determine whether alcohol was involved, but he said nothing indicated that it played a role.

"I've seen many accidents here in my career with the FWC, but this is certainly something unusual," said Pino, adding, "We want to get to the bottom of it and find out and learn from this accident maybe this will never have to happen again."
