Miami City Ballet To World Debut "Euphotic"

MIAMI (CBS4) - The dancers from the Miami City Ballet company have been busy these days, rehearsing for Program II, which premieres Friday night at the Adrienne Arsht Center with four ballets.  Three are classics, and the finale, is the world premiere of Euphotic, an explosive piece of dance written by the famed choreographer from the Royal Ballet Company, Liam Scarlett.

"These closer ballets have a grandeur about them that really shows off the dancers in a different light than the works preceding them. So it's a big undertaking," said Scarlett.

In Euphotic, 28 dancers are lead by three principal dancers and their partners. Principal dancer Jeanette Delgado who has worked with Scarlett once before on the highly acclaimed piece "Viscera" was really his muse for this dance.

"Jeanette is just a dream," explained Scarlett. "The material we created for this new piece is so rich and is some of my finest work. That's a testament to my work how she pushes me further as a choreographer and how I push her as a dancer."

Scarlett also designed the costumes for this ballet. He said working one on one with these dancers has been a treat. .

"Miami City Ballet is a wonderful company to watch in performance and also to work with in studio," said Scarlett."Their work ethic is unmatched."

As for Liam Scarlett, when it comes to choreographing pieces, it's all about drawing audiences into an art form he loves and respects.

"I know in my work I try to be as creative as possible but I really try to pay homage to traditions to the art form. So what I'd love for this piece to do is to pay that respect to the art form but also to open it up to audience and hopefully get new audiences in," Scarlett explained.
