Police: Sunbather Run Over By Truck On Hollywood Beach

HOLLYWOOD (CBS4) - A sunbather relaxing on Hollywood Beach was taken to the hospital Tuesday after he was run over by a city beach safety truck.

Police say the 55 year old beachgoer was lying on the sand at 6001 North Ocean Drive just before 2:30 p.m. when the accident happened.

Authorities tell CBS4 News that the truck's driver approached a tall sand dune caused by normal beach erosion. The sunbather was laying on the other side of the dune, out of the sight line of the driver.

The truck then rolled over the dune, passing over the sunbather below. The driver told police he did not know he had run over anyone until he was flagged down by lifeguards.

The lifeguards and driver ran over to the man to render aid.

The man, who has not been identified, was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in serious condition. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Officials say the sand was very soft, which helped cushion the impact from the truck and prevented the sunbather from sustaining more serious injuries.

The driver of the beach safety truck has also not been identified.
