Partnership Enables Elderly Miami Vets To Avoid Costly Nursing Homes

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — For decades, elderly veterans have poured $100,000 a year, on average, into the Miami VA System. Thanks to a new partnership between that system and Miami Jewish Health, a less expensive option is now available.

The two healthcare systems have partnered to help elderly veterans continue living at home.

The group is targeting veterans who are Medicare eligible, but have incomes that are too high to qualify for Medicaid and do not have sufficient income to pay for the Florida PACE program. Veterans will receive comprehensive acute, home care, skilled care and other social services that will allow them to live in their home environment.

Last year, the average cost for a nursing home resident in the Miami VA System was $100,000 a year. The PACE program costs about $30,000 a year.

The partnership was announced Friday.
