Miami Streets, Transit Impacted By President's Visit

MIAMI (CBSMiami) — President Barack Obama will make his way back to South Florida Thursday with a campaign visit to the University of Miami and attend a private fundraiser in Miami.

As expected a number of streets will be closed to traffic for the presidential motorcade.

Miami police said all streets south of SE 1st Street to the Miami River and from SE 2nd Avenue to Biscayne Blvd. will be within a Security Zone. This area will be completely shutdown from 4:30pm to approximately 5:30pm, to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Once they close this area no traffic will be allowed to go south on SE 2nd Avenue to get the onto the I-95 junction or to go into the Brickell area.

From 5:30pm to approximately 6:40pm traffic will be allowed to go south on SE 2nd Avenue.

At 6:45pm till 7:30pm traffic will once again be shutdown to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic from the area south of SE 1st Street to the Miami River and from SE 2nd Avenue to Biscayne Blvd.

After 7:30pm traffic will once again be open.

Other areas affected by traffic will include Brickell and South Dixie Highway from Coral Gables into Downtown Miami.

During the President's visit, Metrorail and Metromover will to stop service temporarily, and some buses will have to be detoured in the Brickell and Downtown Miami areas.

A few Metrobus routes also will be impacted due to road closures.

Here is a complete breakdown:

Metrorail will stop service from approximately 2:30 to 3:00 p.m., 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. and again from 7:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Metromover will stop service from approximately 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:00 p.m.

On Metrobus, the following routes will be detoured or delayed from approximately 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.:

  • Route 24: This route will be using the South Miami bridge because the Brickell bridge will be closed.
  • Route (Brickell) 95 Express: The afternoon Brickell runs will be detoured using the South Miami bridge due to the Brickell bridge being closed.
  • Route 56: This route will be delayed temporarily during road closures in the Coral Gables area.
  • In addition, all routes that provide service in the downtown Miami area may experience delays between approximately 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. due to road closures.
