Broward Deputy Struck On I-95

LANTANA (CBSMiami) – Broward Sheriff's Deputy Joseph Bialzcak was airlifted to the hospital after he was struck by a vehicle in Palm Beach County, but luckily does not have life threatening injuries.

Deputy Bialzcak was on his way to work when he stopped to help a driver who had been involved in an accident in the southbound lanes of I-95 near 6th Avenue. The deputy was out of his vehicle when he was struck, according to sheriff's office spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion.

"We just know that the deputy was in the roadway assisting the other driver when this other driver came along and hit that vehicle and the deputy, "said Sgt. Mark Wysocky of the Florida Highway Patrol.

Bialzcak is a 22 year veteran of the force and is assigned to the Oakland Park district.

Under the state's "Move Over" law, drivers are required to move over one lane or slow to 20 mph below the speed limit when they see an emergency vehicle or tow truck with flashing lights stopped on the road or on the shoulder.

The accident comes just two days after the BSO laid to rest motorcycle deputy Christopher Schaub who was killed while on patrol on his bike last week.

Deputy Bialzcak is said to be in serious, but stable condition, according to FHP.
