Father Of Wounded Cop Believes Faith Saved His Son's Life

MIAMI (CBS4) - Andrew Joseph believes his faith saved his son's life.

His son, Miami Dade Police Officer Herman Joseph, was volunteering with his father at their church Saturday when police say three men shot him in the chest.

"Sometimes when you believe in God whatever the situation, he's there with you," said Andrew Joseph.

Joseph was doing maintenance work at the Liberty City church at 6701 NW 7th Avenue. When he went to his car in the parking lot, police say he was ambushed, robbed and shot.

Andrew Joseph said he heard the gunfire and went outside to find blood pouring out of his only son's chest.

"That was very (hurtful) yeah and sad," recalled Andrew Joseph.

Joseph said even though he was the one holding up his son, he felt weak and his son gave him strength.

"Oh when he was telling me 'I gonna be okay', I felt comfortable," he said.

Officer Herman was able to call 911 on his own. Fellow officers arrived and rushed him to the Ryder Trauma center via squad car. Police across the city launched a massive manhunt and ultimately arrested Willie Barney, Travares Santiago and Dedrick Brown early Sunday morning.

Congregation members at Joseph's church prayed through the night and into the morning.

"They were very sad and this morning everybody is happy," said Andrew Joseph.

Now out of the hospital, Officer Joseph seems to being doing very well. His father said he spent Sunday out and about visiting with family members.
