Out-Of-Control Driver Ends Up In Backyard Pool

HIALEAH (CBS4) – A Palm Springs North man couldn't believe his eyes when an SUV seemingly came out of nowhere and ended up in his backyard pool.

"I thought it was a movie! I came out here in shock, there's a car in my pool," said Alex Ferrer.

It was not movie. An SUV really did end up in Ferrer's pool. Miami-Dade police say a car ran a stop sign at NW 178th Street and 84th Avenue and the driver of the SUV, the impact sending it through Ferrer's fence and into the pool. Ferrer saw it plow through the fence into his yard and then watched his jet ski launch across the pool.

"My jet ski was sitting right here and you see it's over there now," said Ferrer pointing to where it ended up. "She came in pretty fast and she hit it, she sent it flying over there and what stopped her was the wall."

Alex's father Fernando Ferrer said while he didn't see it, he definitely heard it.

"I heard the screech of the tires, the bang and boom and then I heard the splash in my pool," said the elder Ferrer.

Fernando called 9-1-1 when his son rushed outside to help the woman in the SUV, Sylvia de la Torre, who was still in the vehicle.

"I thought I was going to have to get in the pool so I took my shoes and shirt but we were able to get her out the other side because the passenger side was still out of the water," said Ferrer.

De la Torre said her chest hurt but otherwise she was okay. She said it all happened in seconds and she had no time to hit the brakes. She said she had the right of way when she entered the intersection; that's when she saw two cars which appeared to be going through it from the stopped direction. When she tried to steer into a clear path, De la Torre lost control and slammed through Ferrer's fence and ended up in the pool.
