GOP Set To Make Romney Nomination Official

TAMPA (CBSMiami/CBSNews) – Mitt Romney has worked years for this moment. Tuesday evening at the Republican National Convention in Tampa he will officially be nominated as his party's presidential candidate.

Romney is expected to make an unannounced visit to Tampa on Tuesday to watch his wife's speech.

"I really like Ann's speech," said Romney.

Ann Romney's message is seen as critical to helping her husband close the gender gap. A new CBS News poll finds that the President Barack Obama has a ten point lead over Romney among women.

One issue that is important to many women is the subject of abortion. Monday evening in an interview with Scott Pelley on the CBS Evening News, Romney tried to distance himself from his own party's platform which calls for a constitutional ban on all abortions.

"I'm in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother," said Romney.

Overall, Romney and the president were neck and neck in the poll which could be one reason why Mr. Obama is breaking tradition and heading out on the campaign trail. On Tuesday he will campaign in Iowa and Colorado. The Obama campaign has said they see this as an opportunity to get some 'face time' with voters in several key battleground states as he's sharply criticized at the GOP convention.

"We've seen what the president has offered. We've seen the path he has placed us on. It is a nation in debt, it is a nation in doubt, it is a nation in decline," said Romney's running mate Rep. Paul Ryan.

Romney does have room to gain some voters. A third of all people polled said they don't know enough about Romney to make a decision on whether they view him favorably or unfavorably. Republicans say introduction Romney to America is one of their top priorities at the convention.
