South Florida Storm Preps Should Be Over

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – With South Florida under a Hurricane Watch and the Florida Keys under a Hurricane Warning, residents aren't taking any chances and have packed stores in search of storm supplies.

Local supermarkets have been selling water, flashlights, canned goods and other supplies off the shelves.

Bryan Muson headed to the grocery store after watching storm coverage Saturday. He said, "We got water, we got beer we were going to get ice but instead of getting regular ice we're going to get dry ice because it actually lasts longer and doesn't turn into a puddle of water if the if the power goes out." He spent the first part of the day getting his apartment ready for the torm. "I cleaned off my balcony and got in ship shape anything that could fly away.  We tied everything down and put it in the house got ready to hunker down," he told CBS4's Maggie Newland.

Joel Husch wasn't so sure what to get.

"I'm not really too sure, this is actually my first time going through this," he said as he put water and canned foods into his cart at Winn Dixie.

The parking lots were packed as cars circled endlessly for a parking spot to finally open up at many supermarkets around town.

Stores like Costco, Sam's Club, Target and Walmart were also packed with storm shoppers.

The lines at gas stations were longer than usual Saturday as folks filled up their gas tanks for both cars and generators.

In the past, power outages during or after a storm caused gas stations to shutdown but many gas stations now have generators so power outages shouldn't be a problem.

Prepping for the storm also had people going to the bank or ATMs to withdraw cash. It's always good to have cash after a storm.

Government authorities throughout South Florida have said that with the storm just hours away, all storm preps should now be over and now folks just need to ride out the expected heavy rain and intense wind on Sunday; and stay safe.
