MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – A Miami Beach apartment building has been declared unsafe after the floor collapsed in one of the apartments.

It happened on the first floor of the Ocean Bay building at 8260 Byron Avenue.

Resident Jerry Pena heard a noise and then saw part of the floor collapse.

“I guess you could call it snapping, like snapping over and over again,” described Pena.

The floor collapsed around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night. As it caved in, Pena’s furniture tumbled over.

Pena’s pregnant girlfriend escaped injury, along with her 6-month old baby, after Pena grabbed the baby from his crib just in the nick of time.

“She screamed out, ‘the floor is caving,’ so I grabbed the baby, put him in his stroller. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal but all of a sudden I just ran out but then ten minutes later I came back in to get a couple of stuff and all of this was collapsed and I just ran out right on time,” explained Pena.

It’s not clear what caused the collapse but Miami Beach city officials said the floor joints collapsed and water is partly to blame.

Two of the apartments have significant damage. The city initially deemed five units unsafe, but late Monday, the city evacuated the entire building.

“We have to go we’re out of here we can’t do nothing but leave. It’s like we’re being put out on the street,” said tenant Ashley Collins who now has to find a new place for herself, her two children, and her dog.

Tenants say the city is putting them in hotels for three days, but they are frustrated.

“I paid rent five days ago. I paid $845 five days ago and he’s not going to give me any of my money back,” said Jessica Yager.

The owner said he plans to take care of the family whose floor collapsed by fixing or replacing their belongings.
