Report: Garrard To Undergo Knee Surgery

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - While much of the hype heading into Miami's first preseason game was on the quarterback position, the projected starter will not play in the game Friday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

According to ESPN.com's Adam Schefter and the Chicago Sun-Times' Sean Jensen, David Garrard is out of the game due to a knee injury.

ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen reported that Garrard will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery soon and there is no projection on a recovery.

Watch the local report from CBS4's Jim Berry, live from Sun Life Stadium:

NFL.com's Jeff Darlington reported that when he asked Garrard about a recovery time from the injury, Garrard responded "We'll see." Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported Garrard told him he'll have his knee scoped Saturday and the recovery time will be 2-4 weeks.

Needless to say, the exact nature of the injury and the timeline is still up in the air.

The injury to Garrard means the Dolphins will likely start Matt Moore against the Bucs and have rookie Ryan Tannehill as his backup.

If Garrard can't go before the season, the team can avoid paying his $2.25 million salary if he's cut before week 1, according to Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post.

For Tannehill, it could be the opening he needs to try to make a move on the starting quarterback job. Tannehill will see his first significant action as a professional Friday night.

Because Tannehill will likely be elevated to the backup role against the Bucs; he will likely face the backup defense which will give coaches a better indication of how far along he is when it comes to being an NFL quarterback.

Garrard was performing well in camp, according to Dolphins beat writers.
