MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A Miami man is in critical condition after a hit and run accident on the rain slicked streets of Miami.

The accident happened about 9:15 p.m. Monday in the area of NW 7th Avenue and NW 19th Street.

Police say Charlie Frank Kimball, 70, was walking along NW 7th Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle which sped off.

Kimball's daughters say although he is legally blind, he cherishes his independence and is often out walking. Last night his daughter, Nicola Kimball, says she was worried when her father didn't come home. She later learned he was hit by a car.

"I was devastated," she said, adding, "that's my dad so I was very devastated and then I was devastated to find out the car just left."

Marcia Chisholm, Kimball's stepdaughter called the crash an "unnecessary tragedy" and pleaded with anyone who saw it.

"Please come forward please say something please let us know something because right now everyone is nervous everyone is shaking we don't know what to do what to think or how to even feel," said Chisholm.

Kimball was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. His family says he is unresponsive in extremely critical condition.

Nicola Kimball begged the driver to turn him or herself in.

"It would give us in the family a lot of peace and we can at least go to sleep at night knowing that this person came forward. It's just an accident just come forward so we can be able to put the pieces together," said Kimball.

Police have released a blurry surveillance camera image of the car they believe hit Kimball. It's described as a blue or purple 2005-2007 Ford Taurus.

Police are asking that anyone who may have witnessed the accident to give Crime Stoppers a call at (305) 471-TIPS.
