Keys Politico Sorenson Dead At 77

KEY LARGO (CBSMIami) - Mark Sorensen, former State Representative, Mayor of the Florida Keys and long time Monroe County Commissioner, died with his family by his side Friday, He was 77 years old.

The former Eastern Airlines pilot moved to the Keys in the 60s and slowly became established in Monroe County politics, where he served 4 years as commissioner including two as mayor.In 1998, he was elected as a Republican to state House district 120 until he was forced to office by term limits.

He was replaced by Democrat Ron Saunders, who is running for re-election.

Sorenson also worked as an advisor to Marco Rubio, including serving on his Senate campaign.

Sorenson is survived by his wife, two daughters, 2 sons, and grandchildren. Ironically, a third son died of cancer on this day eight years ago.
