Healthy Food Truck Rolls Into Miami-Dade County Public Schools

MIAMI (CBS4) - School may be out but Miami Dade County Public Schools want to let students know they are not forgotten: their very first food truck is rolling into schools near you.

"We thought it should be a neat idea to provide a truck with fresh made food to our students and see what happens," said Carol Chong, Director of Food and Menu Management with MDCPS.

Since Monday, the food truck has been visiting two high schools in Miami-Dade County.

Chong said the response has been great.

"The students love it," said Chong.

During the school year many students receive free or reduced lunch, that is why Chong says they came up with their kitchen on wheel a way of getting fresh and healthy food out to the students.

The menu always varies, food truck serves from cheese burgers to pork sandwiches with a salad, fruit, milk or juice and best of all the meals are free.

"We love it many students will now be able to eat" said Arlenee Arrechea, a student at Miami Springs Senior High School.

Several sponsors are providing the food including The Schwan Food Company.

"We didn't think twice about it we thought it was a great idea and wanted to be a part of it," said Schwan Food's Joe Adour.

The free lunches are not only given to students attending summer school or practicing sports, any child who is under 18 and sees the food truck can stop and get a free lunch.

During the summer the food truck will be visiting two Miami Dade County Public High Schools. For a complete list of where the food truck will be visit their website www.nutrition.dadeschools.net.
