Local Company Throws Dade Police K9s A Bone

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – It's been said that 'every dog has its day'. For the four legged officers of the Miami-Dade Police Department's K9 Unit, that day has come.

Every day the K9s are utilized in the field to help investigate everything from burglaries to murder.

"Whether it's an armed robber or a burglar or a homicide subject and officers can't find them because they hiding in a perimeter then we use the dogs cause they have such better sense of smell than us .We use the dogs and they locate them for us.," Lt. Jeff Schmidinger said.

Pureformulas.com has donated supplies to the K9 Unit which has been collared by budget cuts.

"This is just helps us to get through when moneys are so tight," Schmidinger said.

The company wanted to pay it forward.

"They came out to our warehouse when we had a possible intruder and they assured us everything was safe and as it should be," said Ann Shea from pureformulas.com.

The unit is comprised of 18 dogs with extraordinary and invaluable skills; when fire rescue and police divers were unable to find a drowning victim, the unit used dogs to find the victim.

"We put the dogs on the boat and the dog was able to locate the odor coming up from the water, they dropped a buoy and were able to locate the victim," Schmidinger said.

Another K9, Zeus, who has been part of the force for six years has helped nab 71 criminals.

The dogs received over six thousand dollars worth of shampoo, vitamins, and a toy.

With all the doggie bags they get to go home with, these canines have plenty to wag about.
