Burglary Suspect Shot In Pembroke Pines Apartment

PEMBROKE PINES (CBSMiami) – One person was shot early Sunday morning in what appeared to be a failed attempt to burglarize a Pembroke Pines apartment.

Just after 9 a.m. police received a call about the burglary in the 12000 block of SW 14th Street. Clifford Atis, 22, said he was sleeping when two men broke in.

"While they were inside an encounter ensued which resulted in one of the subjects being shot," said police spokesman Christopher Chacon-Chang.

Chang said Attis shot 23-year old Wendell Rozier in the leg.

Rozier and his alleged accomplice ran out of the apartment to a waiting white Pontiac Grand Prix. Once inside, the driver sped off.

Officers pulled over the car a short distance away and found Rozier inside. He was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital.

Attis' neighbors said they couldn't believe what happened.

"It's really scary because I just moved in a week ago," said Suvitha Chandran, "I thought this place was safe."

"I have a concealed weapons permit," said Ryan Pescetto. "I think the guy was, I think he had the right. I mean I would have probably done the same thing."

Police with K9s and weapons drawn search the gated community but were unable to locate the two other suspects.  They believe they know who they are but only gave out a general description of who they were looking for; both men appeared to be in their mid-20s and around six feet tall.  One of the men, police said was around 160 pounds, was wearing a black shirt and jeans.  The other weighed around 200 pounds and was wearing a black shirt.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Pembroke Pines Police Department at (954) 431-2200, email to Tips@ppines.com, or call Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.
