S. Fla. Radio Pioneer Jerry Rushin Retiring

MIAMI (CBS4) - After four decades in the business, South Florida radio legend Jerry Rushin announced Wednesday that he will retire in June.

Rushin began his career at heritage station WEDR (99 Jamz) in 1973 as the part-time on-air personality "Super Jerry J". Two year later, he stepped away from the mic to become the station's program director and sales representative.

In 1980, Rushin was names general manager, and later Miami VP and Market Manager  for Cox Media Group, which, in addition to WEDR, includes WFLC 97.3 FM, WHQT 105.1 FM, and WFEZ 93.1 FM.

"During the course of my career, I have had the great opportunity of being mentored by many exceptional people, and, in turn, the privilege of contributing to the growth of many others," said Rushin. "My time in Miami radio has been more fulfilling than I could have imagined, and I will always carry deep respect and genuine love for those that have been part of building our brands. While I am sad to be leaving the day-to-day interaction with a remarkable group of people and a business I love, I am excited about this new phase of my life and the opportunity to contribute even more to the Miami community during my retirement."

Rushin's announcement comes on the heels of another well known radio deejay bidding adieu to the Miami market.

DJ Laz, formerly of Power 96, announced he will leave the Magic City to host a morning show for a Spanish Broadcasting Systems station in Los Angeles.

CMG has already begun the search for Rushin's replacement and a successor will be named in the coming weeks.
