Jose Wejebe, Host Of Spanish Fly Fishing Show, Dies In Plane Crash

NAPLES (CBSMiami) - Jose Wejebe, the Cuban-born host of the Outdoor Network's popular Spanish Fly fishing show who grew up in South Florida, was killed Friday when the plane he apparently was flying crashed and burned upon takeoff from a Southwest Florida airport.

A plane registered to Wejebe took off shortly after 5 p.m. Friday from Everglades Airpark, and burst into flames when it crashed shortly after takeoff. One body was removed, and the Collier County medical examiner's office has yet to officially confirm the identity.

Wejebe grew up in Miami, and later became a Key West charter captain. In the 90's he was approached to do a fishing show for ESPN, and that led to the popular Spanish Fly, considered to be one of the best fishing shows on television.

The program later moved to the Outdoor Channel.
