Group Forms To Support Repeal Ban On Public Funding Of Churches

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBSMiami) – A new group called "Yes on 8 Campaign" has formed to support a repeal of Florida's ban on public funding of churches and other religious organizations.

Amendment 8, which is set to be voted upon this fall, would prohibit state and local governments from denying funding based on religious identity or belief.

Miami Republican Juan Zapata announced the new group Thursday. If the amendment is to become law, it will need 60 percent support from voters on November 6.

Among the amendments opponents is the Florida Education Association. The FEA said the measure would open the door for more voucher programs that allow students to attend parochial and other private schools at public expense.

It's unknown whether the proposed measure would pass U.S. Constitutional requirements.
