Trayvon Martin's Parents Appear At NYC March

NEW YORK (CBSMiami/AP) — The parents of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was shot to death by a neighborhood watch captain in Sanford, Florida, attended a march in his memory Wednesday night in New York City.

Both parents were part of hundreds of demonstrators who hit the New York City Streets Wednesday evening.

Demonstrators chanted "We Want Arrests" during the march in Manhattan's Union Square.

Their son Trayvon was shot to death last month while returning to a gated community in Sanford after buying candy at a convenience store.

The teenager was unarmed and wearing a hoodie at the time. He was in Sanford visiting his father.

The shooter, George Zimmerman, has not been charged in the Feb. 26 shooting. He has said he shot Martin in self-defense after Martin attacked him.

Zimmerman is white; his family says he's Hispanic.

The case has ignited a furor against the police department of the Orlando suburb of 53,500 people, prompting rallies and a protest in Gov. Rick Scott's office Tuesday. The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division said it is sending its community relations service this week to Sanford to "address tension in the community."

Earlier in the week, the federal agency opened a civil rights probe into the shooting, and in Florida, Seminole County State Attorney Norm Wolfinger said a grand jury will meet April 10 to consider evidence in the case.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is also involved in the state case.
