Does Facebook Have A Dark Side?

MIAMI (CBS4) - A new study says Facebook offers a gateway for hundreds of shallow relationships, emotionally detached communication and can promote anti-social behavior especially among narcissists.

In the journal Personality and Individual Differences, the study suggests the more Facebook friends you have the more likely you'll be a "socially disruptive" narcissist who seeks social support rather than providing it, getting angry when you don't get comments on status updates and retaliating against negative comments.

For full disclosure, I investigated my CBS-4 colleagues' Facebook pages.

Jim has almost twenty nine hundred friends. Eliott about the same. David... thirty five hundred. Shannon... about two hundred less. The champs are our morning anchor women: Lisette Gonzalez is nearing five thousand, and forty four hundred like Rhiannon Ally's fan page.

In their defense, and mine, Facebook has become part of the job for journalists.

I'm pushing thirty eight hundred combined on my personal and professional pages. That's despite being the worst Facebooker alive. Just me, or is too much work? But feel free to friend me. Every once in a while I do post something important or fun and I promise to try and not be too narcissistic.
