Car Slams Into Poolside Cabana, Kills Pregnant Woman
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – An expectant mother was killed, a second woman seriously injured when a vehicle barreled into poolside cabana of a Ft. Lauderdale hotel.
According to Matt Little with Ft. Lauderdale Fire Rescue it happened around 1:30 p.m. in the 600 block of East Las Olas Boulevard. A woman driving on SE 4th Street, which is adjacent to the Riverside Hotel, lost control, slammed through a fence and into a cabana area where it knocked down two pillars. Inside the bathroom in the cabana area a woman who was seven months pregnant was killed.
Witnesses told CBS4's Natalia Zea that they heard the couple discussing going back to Boston shortly before the accident.
"We are very sorry about this tragedy that happened. We are still trying to get details from fire and police on what exactly happened," said the hotel's General Manager Heiko Dobrikow in a statement.
The driver was taken to Broward General Medical Center as 'high index trauma alert,' said Little.
Police have not released the names of either woman. What caused the woman to lose control of her vehicle is under investigation.
