Driver Sought In Fatal Ft. Lauderdale Hit & Run Accident

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Fort Lauderdale Police are looking for a hit and run driver who struck and killed an elderly woman early Saturday morning.

The accident happened around 7 a.m. as Digna Camacho, 70, was walking northbound near the 2400 block of Davie Boulevard.

Fort Lauderdale Police Det. Travis Mandell said a black 2005 GMC Envoy heading eastbound struck Camacho first. While she was on the ground, a gray Ford F-150 truck with a crew cab also traveling eastbound ran over her.

According to Det. Mandell, the man got out of his car, looked back at Camacho, and then got back in his car and drove away.

"As if they had ran over a curb or an animal or something," said son Orastes Llanes. "It's beyond me how a human being can do something like that."

Camacho, mother of four and grandmother of 10, was pronounced dead on the scene.

"My mother was the pillar of this family," said Llanes. "My youngest son, he won't leave my side. My mother picked him up every week from school."

"There was nothing more important to her than her grandkids though and her children," said her other son Joel Camacho.

The driver of the Envoy,Pierre Lacroix, 31, remained on the scene and is cooperating with police.

The driver of the Ford truck is said to have gray hair and was last seen wearing a white shirt.

"My life is never gonna be the same you know, whether this guy turns himself in. He took from us a chunk of us," said Llanes.

Anyone with information is urged to call Investigator Jill Hirsch at 954-828-5753 or Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.
