Report: MLB Expanding Playoffs In 2012

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – If you thought the Major League Baseball season was long, just wait because it's about to get longer.

According to Foxsports.com's Ken Rosenthal, sources have confirmed that Major League Baseball will expand the playoffs from eight teams to 10 teams starting this season by adding two additional wild card teams.

This could open a big door for the Miami Marlins in 2012, assuming the team can stay healthy for most of the regular season. Getting past Philadelphia in the NL East will be tough, as will the Atlanta Braves, but an additional wild card spot could be just what the Marlins ordered.

But, there's a downside to the development Major League Baseball will run into as well, football. If the season extends too far into October, and possibly November, it runs the risk of losing most casual fans to both the NFL and college football.

Major League Baseball is expected to officially announce the new playoff format as early as Thursday, according to Rosenthal.
