Report: Marlins Continue To Pinch Salaries

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins had hoped to shed their penny-pinching image over the summer by spending more than $100 million on several free agents. But, it's the minimum salaries that threaten to keep the Marlins image as being cheap.

According to FoxSports.com, the Marlins will automatically renew the contracts of all of their players with 0-3 years of service at a cost of $480,000 a piece.

The problem is that for players like Gaby Sanchez, Mike Stanton, and Logan Morrison, their salary will be the same as a rookie. Thus, some players who are good and get stuck with the minimum salary may be much more inclined to go to salary arbitration after three years.

That could cost the Marlins a lot more money in the long-run, especially given their historical record in arbitration cases. The Marlins are 3-7 all-time in salary arbitration and have lost their last four straight hearings.

The Marlins have nine players with at least one or two years of service, according to the FoxSports.com report.
